Lesser Poland, one of the sixteen voivodeships, Polish districts, to be found in the Republic of Poland, is situated in the southern part of the country and has a population of 3,267,731 as of 2006.
Also referred to as Malopolska Province, Lesser Poland was created on January 1, 1999, out of the former Nowy Sacz, Tarnow, Krakow and parts of the Bielsko-Biala and Katowice voivodeships.
The considerably larger historical region of Lesser Poland is not to be confused with the present day administrative region, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Malopolska Voivodeship. One of the most important historical regions in Poland, Lesser Poland contains the voivodeships Malopolska, Subcarpathia, Swietokrzyskie, Lublin, eastern parts of Silesia, and southern parts of Masovia and Lodz.
Today the voivodeship of Lesser Poland, covers an area of over 15,000 square kilometres, is divided into 19 districts and 3 municipal districts, and contains 57 cities and towns – the largest of which is Krakow.
