Driving in Town.
Like any other busy city, Krakow experiences similar traffic problems, namely too many cars and not enough parking spaces. Driving in the city centre can be a stressful experience. Not only are the roads highly congested but the city itself is divided into zones of restricted traffic and parking.
Generally, the speed limit in built up areas is 50km/h from 5:00-23:00. After 23:00 it is 60km/h. Outside urban areas the speed limit is 90km/h and on the motorway it is 130km/h. EU driver's licenses are recognised in Poland and traffic signs and rules are similar to those in the rest of mainland Europe. But don't forget that Poland has right hand traffic!
Although the Polish are renowned for liking a strong drink, they have an almost zero tolerance policy when it comes to drink driving. The permitted alcohol level while driving is 0.2 promilles – about the size of a small glass of beer. Offenders face up to two years in prison and the loss of their driver's license.
Not only is car hire possible directly at the airport, there are also a number of national and international car rental companies in Krakow. Charges are based on a daily rate and a kilometre charge. An EU issued driver's license is required and the minimum age to rent a car is 21.
